Arrangement

In the interim cabinet, Welensky served as Minister of Transport and Development; from 1954 to 1956, he was Minister of Transport and Communications and also Minister of Posts. It was the practice of the Federal Government for most ministers to hold more than one portfolio. The material relates primarily to the period for which Welensky held these portfolios, but certain subjects covered (railways and broadcasting) had already attracted his interest in his Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) days and would continue to do so after his accession to the office of Federal Prime Minister (higher appointments and organisational matters in the railways; the introduction of a television service).
