Commonwealth Conferences, 1951-1956
For material relating to Welensky's visits to London to attend these conferences, see the relevant files between MSS. Welensky Papers 395/3 and 407/5; for further references to such meetings, see MSS. Welensky Papers 43/2 and 61/7. For material relating to the attendance of Sir Godfrey Huggins, see also MSS. Welensky Papers 701/3 and 701/7. The volumes contain minutes and memoranda for an occasion described as 'Meeting of Commonwealth Prime Ministers' - usually known as the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' Conference - despite the presence of other types of heads of government. The set here carries through from Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), whose Prime Minister attended until the establishment of the Federation (Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi) in 1953. Neither the Federation (Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Malawi) nor Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe) was a full member, reflecting a status falling somewhat short of independence.
