'Broken Hill Files', 1948-1953
This section contains the residue of Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) files not from the Liaison Office system. Evidence within the collection suggests that these files were once more numerous. Some have been deliberately transferred to other sections in the compilation of this catalogue: to that for Rhodesia Railways at MSS. Welensky Papers 10/1-19/7; to that for the Commissioner for Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) in London at MSS. Welensky Papers 61/9-62/2; to that for the negotiations on closer association at MSS. Welensky Papers 64/7-91/1; and to the 'personal' files (files of correspondence with named individuals) at MSS. Welensky Papers 584/2-686/11. This was done because the 'Broken Hill files' were neither coherent nor whole, either as a system or as individual files. Certain letters with the P/C/number/year references had been incorporated into Liaison files very soon after their creation. It is not clear to what extent the P/C files predating the Liaison Office became an adjunct to its files rather than to those maintained in Broken Hill (Kabwe) in the Liaison era, and so forth. The files here are much more concerned with parish pump politics. Within individual files listed hereunder, there is some spread of references, e.g. P/C 126/52 contains material marked P/12/W/51.
