Chromogenic prints, 1970-1988, n.d.
Mixed-size chromogenic prints of portraits by Bern Schwartz.
Chromogenic printing was the main method used to produce prints of Bern Schwartz's portraits, until Ctein began creating dye-transfer prints of the portraits for Ronny Schwartz in 1982.
MSS. Schwartz photogr. J. 8/1-9 contain sets of 'Master C-prints'. These are prints produced with particular attention to colour management and using high-quality materials, in order to produce a superior resulting image that is suitable for exhibition.

Biographical / Historical
Chromogenic printing is a type of photographic printing process that was commonly used in the 1970s. A colour negative is projected onto silver halide paper, which is comprised of layers of light-sensitive emulsions. Light filters through the negative and causes a reaction in each layer of emulsion, forming a latent image on the paper. The paper is then bathed in a succession of chemicals to fix the image, before being washed and dryed.
Chromogenic printing is cheaper and less labour-intensive than dye transfer printing, but its results are less vibrant and more prone to image degradation.
Chromogenic prints are sometimes referred to throughout the collection as 'C-prints'.
Arrangement
The materials are arranged as follows:
- (MSS. Schwartz photogr. J. 0) index cards and order forms relating to the mounted chromogenic prints
- (MSS. Schwartz photogr. J. 1-5) chromogenic prints mounted on board
- (MS. Schwartz photogr. J. 6) canvas mounted chromogenic prints
- (MS. Schwartz photogr. J. 7) unmounted chromogenic prints
- (MS. Schwartz photogr. J. 8) chromogenic print master sets
Due to the volume of prints within this series, they have been further arranged into sub-series by ascending order of size. This decision was taken in order to highlight the unique properties of each print, to maintain clarity, and to enhance the usability of the catalogue.
Within each sub-series, the prints are arranged into two types: 'Portraits' and 'Additional [or Extra] portraits'. Within these categories, prints are ordered alphabetically by sitter surname, or sometimes by sitter title, followed by prints originally boxed under other labels, such as 'personal portraits' or 'landscapes'. This arrangement of the materials reflects their original order, as received from The Bern Schwartz Family Foundation.
