This series comprises:
(MSS. Schwartz C. 1-10) materials relating to Bern Schwartz's research and general interest in portrait photography. This includes notebooks and papers on exercises and early photographic influences, notes relating to lectures, and other memoranda. Also included are notes from lessons with photographer Philippe Halsman, dictated by Bern Schwartz and edited by Ronny Schwartz, and Bern's self-titled photography manual.
(MSS. Schwartz C. 11-15) research files on sitters, compiled mostly by Fiona Poole. These files contain handwritten and typed notes, supplemented with secondary sources such as photocopies of news cuttings, published photographs, reference biography services from the House of Commons Library, and excerpts from Who's Who. Also included are some copies of sitter notes and obituaries, as well as research on potential sitters who were ultimately not photographed by Schwartz.

- (MSS. Schwartz C. 11-15) research files on portrait sitters arranged in reverse alphabetical order by surname, or occasionally alphabetically by the individual's title.
