Correspondence with Arthur Creech Jones, MP, almost entirely with Rita Hinden, 14 Oct 1940-26 Feb 1943
Correspondence with Arthur Creech Jones, MP, almost entirely with Rita Hinden. A number of undated letters and memoranda are included (fols. 205-233). The correspondence opens with two letters from Rita Hinden telling Creech Jones that the Fabian Colonial Bureau had 'officially come to life', inviting him to act as Chairman, and arranging for the first meeting of the Advisory Committee. The letters that follow are concerned with the growth and administration of the Bureau, its journal Empire, and the preparation and publication of pamphlets; contacts with and contributions to other journals, in particular The Economist and New Statesman: the formation of a panel of Members of Parliament (fols. 131, 136, 141, 147 and 168) and of sub-committees (fols. 161, 171-172, 184); and the organisation of meetings and conferences. The correspondence covers many aspects of colonial policy and research, the co-operative movement and trade unionism. There are frequent references to Creech Jones's contacts with the Colonial Secretaries (Lord Lloyd, Lord Moyne and Viscount Cranborne) and Under-Secretaries (G.H. Hall and Harold Macmillan).
