  1. (fols. 1-2) cutting from the Perthshire Courier about the dinner of the Kilgraston tenantry in honour of the marriage of Charles Grant with Matilda Hay, 9 Oct 1856
  2. (fols. 3-29) notebook compiled by Charles Grant's mother, Lady Lucy Grant, about the voyage to Sarawak following the marriage, accompanied by John Brooke Brooke and his bride (Charles Grant's sister Annie), and containing letters and copies of extracts from letters from Charles Grant, his wife, John Brooke Brooke, Alan to Alaric Grant, Captain Cresswell, Royal Navy, to his mother about a visit to Sarawak, and from Mrs McDougall; also general notes about Sarawak and about sending goods to Borneo, 1857-1859.

Copies of letters from Charles Grant to London about the final break between Sir James Brooke and John Brooke Brooke, 1863:

  1. (fols. 1-59) letters to Charles Johnson Brooke about his decision to follow his supposed duty to Sir James as Rajah rather than his duty to his brother. The letters are numbered 2-6: see MSS. Pac. s. 90 Vol. 11, fols. 157-186, for 'top copies' of Nos 1-3. There is also a copy made by Charles Grant's wife of the postscript to his letter dated 4 May 1863, see MSS. Pac. s. 90 Vol. 11, fols. 185-186, 1 May-4 Oct 1863
  2. (fols. 60-69) letters to Arthur [Crookshank], the second with marked passages about the changed character of Sir James in later years, 10 May and 19 Aug 1863
  3. (fols. 70-90) letter to Spenser St John, repudiating his criticism of John Brooke Brooke and stating his own 'real and honest opinion' on the breach and his determination not to 'abandon Brooke in his trials', 12 Sep 1863.

  1. (fols. 1-19) 'Synopsis of the Rajah's attitude towards Brooke, 1848-1863, by Charles Grant': duplicate of the copy given by Charles Grant to Hope Brooke, with annotations made by Charles Grant in red ink at a later date. The envelope that held these 'Extracts and Notes' (which in fact cover events from 1837-1874) is initialled 'J. P[atrick] G[rant] 1904', n.d.
  2. (fols. 20-21) copy of extract from a letter from Spenser St John to Charles Grant about money owed to Hope Brooke (see MSS. Pac. s. 90 Vol. 15, fol. 65, for original letter; also MSS. Pac. s. 90/3, folder 10, for an account by Admiral Basil Brooke of Hope Brooke's life after his return to England as a young child), [21 Apr 1874].

  1. (fols. 1-7) two letters from W.G. Brodie at Kuching, in answer to Charles Grant's request for news of Sarawak; there are references to Dennison, Crocker, [Robert] Hay, St John, J.B. Cruickshank, and Hope Brooke, 11 Dec 1874 and 8 Mar 1875
  2. (fols. 8-15) copy, of the Memorial of the services of the Revd. W.H. Gomes by C.T.C. Grant of Kilgraston (see MSS. Pac. s. 90 Vol. 13, fols. 303-306), 16 Jul 1877
  3. (fol. 16) letter from Alexander Allardyce, returning and commenting on Grant's Tour among the Dyaks (see MSS. Pac. s. 90/5, items 3 and 4), 14 Jul 1879
  4. (fols. 17-18) letter from Crocker about photographs of Borneo, a meeting in Labuan with Sir Charles Brooke, and the encouraging prospects for British North Borneo, 11 Sep 1888
  5. (fols. 19-45) correspondence and notes concerning St John's book, The Life of Sir James Brooke (1879): correspondence with William Blackwood about publishing the book, and with St John about the revision of the text and publication; and a letter from Hugh Low to Charles Grant (fols. 40-43) about the book declining to write 'a chapter on something' and referring to his 'blue book report', written in 1875, in which he had stated his opinion of the Rajah and the results of his policy, 15 Jul 1878-16 Jan 1880
  6. (fols. 46-58) correspondence and notes concerning St John's book, The Life of Sir James Brooke (1879): Charles Grant's notes and comments on the text, which include references to: Bishop McDougall and the Borneo Mission; the Borneo Company; the death and funeral of the Rajah; portrait of the Rajah; and Charles Johnson Brooke. Grant edited the book (see MSS. Pac. s. 90 Vol. 15, fols. 57-134, for St John's letters on the subject). 1879-1880.

Folder 7:

Paste-up of six chapters [perhaps of 'Charles Grant's Borneo Book'; see Folder 6] numbered 3-7 and 9, n.d. The text is in Charles Grant's hand, with the addition of sections of printed pages, some from his book A Tour amongst the Dyaks of Sarawak in 1858 (see MSS. Pac. s. 90/5, items 3 and 4). The chapters are endorsed with titles as follows:

  1. (fols. 1-8) No. 3. Government and trade, etc. of Sarawak
  2. (fols. 9-10) No. 4. A Dyak Legend
  3. (fols. 11-25) No. 5. Animals, Birds, insects, fishes, etc, and anecdotes relating thereto
  4. (fols. 26-32) No. 6. Alligators & Stories
  5. (fols. 33-34) No. 7. Borneo Scenery
  6. (fols. 35-41) No. 9. Dyak Warfare.

Folder 8:

  1. (item 1) fragments of manuscript contained in envelope inscribed by Charles Grant: 'An Arabic book found in a house at Bruné (Borneo Proper) by C.T.C. Grant after the capture of that place by the British Squadron - 1846'. A letter dated 12 Feb 1969 from Martin Lings, Department of Oriental Printed Books and Manuscripts, British Museum, in reply to an enquiry from Admiral Basil Brooke, identifies the text as part of a copy of Dalā'il-Khairāt, n.d.
  2. (item 2) 'Extract from a Malay Book' n.d.
