Comprises:
- (fols. 1-263) letters to his parents and his sisters Margaret ('Tish' - Lady Gray), Mary, Annie (Mrs J.B. Brooke), and Lucy (Mrs C.W.A. Feilding), including some manuscript copies. Seven letters to his father, written between 1858 and 1868 and selected at a later date by Charles Grant as 'bearing upon Brooke's administration in Sarawak and other matters', are placed together at the end (fols. 235-263)
- (fols. 264-486) letters to his wife Matilda, her parents, Mr and Mrs William Hay of Dunse Castle, N.B., and other members of her family, chiefly her brother Robert Hay (fols. 338-339 and 348-486).
