Folder 4, 1853-1967:

Papers concerning Colonel Charles William Brooke [eldest son of Thomas Brooke and half-brother of Sir James Brooke] and his descendants. These papers were given to Mrs Noble by Miss Winifred Brooke, the Colonel's great-granddaughter (see also MSS. Pac. s. 83 Vol. 14, folder A, fols. 117-170). Notes attached to some papers are in her hand. Comprises:

  1. (fol. 1) manuscript copy of poem by Moore, and on verso a list of deaths (Thomas Brooke and his descendants) and a note about the Brooke family, 11 Dec 1853
  2. (fol. 2) copy of baptismal certificate (Montreal) of Charles William Alfred Brooke, 30 Jun 1860
  3. (fols. 3-20) seven holograph letters from Sir James Brooke to his nephew Alfred Bainbrigge Brooke, referring to gifts of money; and a letter from Sir James's solicitors enclosing cheque for £10, a bequest from his estate. Attached to each is a covering letter from Arthur Noble to Bertram Brooke and to Jean Halsey, dated 8 and 9 Apr 1964; the first explains the provenance of the diary, 12 Sep 1866-10 Jul 1868
  2. (fol. 3-4) letter from Otto C. Doering 3rd to Arthur Noble, about the diary extract lent to him, and referring to Dr H.S. Morris, London School of Economics, and his interest in Sarawak, 2 Jun 1965.
