Short stories and writings by Celia Furse:
Folder 1: Cover of red notebook labelled 'Half Term or The Umbrella' containing loose manuscript drafts:
- Four chapters of a story about Gaye and her brother, no title, (15 pages; 20 pages; 15 pages; 13 pages)
- Three chapters of a story about Gaye, possibly a continuation of the same novel as above but these chapters have a note attached reading 'Cambridge Story 2 versions (Mr Bateson & Miss Saunders) Religion v. Science 1911 (approx)', (13 pages; 17 pages; 13 pages) with four pages of a pencil draft
- 'Half-Term or The Umbrella', seven pages (incomplete)
Folder 2: Cover of a maroon notebook with note attached - 'Parson Sharpe [of] Netherhampton' - containing material for a projected novel relating to Netherhampton and the Grove family which Celia seems to have started working on in the 1920s. With some notes in other hands:
- Small red notebook containing at one end notes on the 18th century and at the other end a list of the costs of a wedding (presumably Celia's own), 1920s
- Letter from 'R.S.T.' suggesting books on the Regency/Victorian period
- Two pages from a typed letter from Henry Newbolt to his friend Alice Hylton, 1921, discussing his friend Crawford's dream of Madame Sharpe
- Two further extracts from Henry Newbolt's letters to Alice Hylton, 1915, 1921, in Margaret Newbolt's handwriting
- Biographical notes on the different characters, 1920s
- Rough manuscript draft of chapter one (16 pages) with three pages of notes
- Draft summaries of chapters
Folder 3: Journals and magazines:
- 'The Cecilian & Franciscan Journal', Aug-Sep 1904, labelled on front 'MCS Childhood journal & stories'
- 'The Mount Grace Journal', No. 1, Aug 9, 1906: pages from an exercise-book held by a purple cord containing handwritten news, poems and drawings including a drawing of Mount Grace Priory by Margaret Newbolt
- 'The Turnip: A Wiltshire Landworker's Magazine, Issue 1, Nov 1917 (two copies) and Issue 2, Apr 1918 (three copies). Contains typed letters and other contributions, with original drawings by Cynthia Lubbock, and a circulation list at the end
Folder 4: Short stories and writings:
- 'Frederick & Catherine [or The Wisdom of Folly]: A Comedy in Two Acts', manuscript of play (v + 17 pages), performed by Celia and her cousins at Orchardleigh, Jan 1911, with a typed programme
- Blue cover of a notebook containing an untitled manuscript about Julian and Stella (87 pages numbered 1-23 and 83-139), n.d. [1940s-1950s], with note by Theresa Whistler to say that the shell-shocked Julian is based on Francis Newbolt
- Post Second World War autobiographical notes: 'Grandmother's Rag Bag' / '1958-1959-1960' (Ralph is 'Adrian', 13 pages); 'Aprons' (based on Mr. and Mrs. Puddicombe, two pages); 'Morshead' (Ralph is 'Adrian', a description of his study at Halsdon, where many of the rooms were named, six pages) and 'Stray Thoughts of a Grandmother' (six pages), 1954-1960
- Incomplete story titled 'Clare' (not titled by Celia) based on Celia and John Henry Monsell Furse (here called 'Uncle Venn') at Netherhampton, nine pages, n.d. [1960?]
