Biographical / Historical
Maria Becket was involved with politics, activism, and human rights in Cyprus both before the fall of the Greek military junta and after the invasion of Cyprus by Turkey in 1974. Notably, she was instrumental in setting up Radio Free Cyprus from Beirut, which broadcasted messages from the exiled Cypriot leader Archbishop Makarios in July 1974.
Maria Becket later became involved in the care and placement of displaced Cypriot children and set up an organisation for displaced Greek-Cypriot women to produce embroidery to raise money for refugees. She also took part in the 'Women Walk Home' march of Greek-Cypriot women to northern Cyprus in 1975. The collection also covers information on the EDEK Socialist Party of Cyprus and international relations between Greece, Turkey, and the USA regarding Cyprus.
