Heliostat and other instruments, photographic study of a collection of instruments for demonstration of polarised light and other physical experiments by Claude-Marie Ferrier for Dubosq-Soleil. The objects in the photograph were exhibited by Dubosq-Soleil at the Great Exhibition of 1851. The instruments include a saccharometer on the left, a heliostat in the centre and a haloscope on the right.

Biographical / Historical

Claude-Marie Ferrier was an early French photographer, known for his portraits of prominent French people, his work at the London Great Exhibition, and for his production of stereoviews to be viewed through the stereoscope invented by David Brewster. Together with Charles Soulier, he owned a large company in Paris, producing and distributing glass stereoviews of European subjects.
