A BBC2 'World About Us' programme, considering the need for population control and family planning in rural southern India, and how Oxfam is helping to introduce family planning. Children are needed to help with the work in the fields, but the cost of living is escalating, there is the risk of unemployment, and lack of means to provide for large families. Birth customs and traditional beliefs about fertility are also described. The film looks at women's roles in the extended family, and portrays the pressures of family size in the context of global population expansion. Oxfam assisted in the making of the film.
