Biographical / Historical
General meetings of the whole Conservative Delegation to the European Parliament took place on a regular basis during sessions of the European Parliament, and were typically concerned with the discussion of the immediate business before the European Parliament. They also served as a forum for general political discussions, and for the election of the Delegation's officers and Bureau members.
From 1973-1992 meetings of the whole Delegation typically took the format of whole meetings of the European Parliamentary Group (the European Conservative Group from 1973-1979 and the European Democratic Group from 1979-1992), which were also attended by members of the other national delegations. Meetings of the British Section of the Group were also held alongside the meetings of the whole group, however as the Conservative Delegation was by far the largest element of both the European Conservative Group and European Democratic Group, these Section meetings were typically only concerned with domestic political matters.
Following the decision of the Conservative Delegation to join the far-larger Group of the European People's Party (EPP) in 1992, the meetings of the British Section of the Group became the primary forum for Delegation-wide meetings.
