Custodial History

Rawlinson's acquisition of the papers of Bishop Turner is thus mentioned by himself in a letter to H. Owen, 16 Nov 1749 (MS. Rawl. C. 989, fol. 84b): "I met with, some few years since, the MSS. of Turner, Bishop of Ely, and his brother the President of Corpus, which lay dormant till after Mr. Chishull's death, executor to the President."

Related Materials

Theological Adversaria of [Peter Gunning, D.D., bishop of Chichester], in thirteen volumes; chiefly in Latin. See MSS. Rawl. C. 613-625.

The volumes (which were bound up after the papers came into Dr. Rawlinson's possession) are described in a MS. lettering on the back as being "Doctoris Turner, Decani Cantuar., Collectanea Theologica;" the handwriting, however, is identified with that of Bishop Gunning (to whom two papers in the volumes are addressed) by comparison with letters in the Tanner collection.
