[Background information is given in a memorandum from Keith Britto to Party Chairman Cecil Parkinson dated 12/01/1982: 'In 1980 Lord Rothschild wanted to finance a major research project for the Conservative Party. He was not prepared to give money directly to the Party and he did not want his involvement to be known. At the suggestion of the Policy Unit at No. 10 we suggested a research project on the level of economic literacy in the electorate. The research was commissioned with Marplan and paid for by Lord Rothschild via a third party…' The Economic Literacy Project was completed in April 1981 and the final report made in July 1981.
