Biographical / Historical

[The Nationalised Industries Policy Group, chaired by Tim Eggar MP, was one of 10 policy groups set up by Sir Geoffrey Howe in 1982, the recommendations of which subsequently formed the basis for the development of the Party's 1983 General Election manifesto by the No. 10 Policy Unit.

Its terms of reference were:-
  1. 'To review progress made in reducing the role of the State and in restoring state industries to the competitive disciplines of the market sector by private ownership, reduction of monopoly powers and other means;
  2. To consider the proper relationship between Parliament, Government and the nationalised industries with specific reference to pricing and the flow of new investment funds; and
  3. To examine the scope for the provision of public sector services by the private sector'.
It held its first meeting on 17th November, 1982 and made its final report in March 1983]
