Biographical / Historical

This Committee was set up by Balfour in 1911 in the wake of the Party's defeat in the 1910 general elections and was chaired by Lord Chilston (hence the Committee is also referred to as the Chilston Committee). Amongst other things, the Committee was responsible for confining the Chief Whip's responsibilities to matters of parliamentary management, while his other responsibilities were transferred to the new posts of Party Treasurer and Chairman of the Party Organisation. A note written subsequently by Ralph Glyn, secretary to the Committee, in 1929 states: 'As Secretary of that Committee I had all the papers but recently destroyed most of them…'
