- Typescript diaries, 1933-1935, comprising: 'Trip to Fyfield starling roost', Feb 1933 (5 leaves); 'Log of an Expedition by H.N.S. and G.K.Y. to Scotland in Search of Divers Birds to Photograph, Jun 1933 (45 folios), and 'Noss Island, Shetland. A composite account of two visits...', Jun 1934 and June 1935 (22 leaves), with related letters from G.K. Yeates (1987) and Pat Venables (1989), the latter enclosing a photograph of Southern taken on Noss Island
- Spring back album and loose papers on the distribution of birds, [1934?]-1966, mainly relating to Scotland but also including papers relating to other areas of the UK and worldwide. Includes notes by Southern on his trip to Shetland in 1934 and 1935
- Brown spring back album, 'The vegetation of May Island 1936', containing grasses, a feather, and records of mammals caught
