Numbers 206-233. The first ten letters, written from Onitsha, describe Mathews's work as Acting Resident. In March he became Resident of Makurdi, and numbers 213-214 describe the town and Residence, and the bridge ("the longest in Africa") under construction across the River Benue. Numbers 216-217 describe the visit of the Acting Governor, Sir Frank Baddeley; number 219, that of two Danish journalists, Ms. and Mrs. Bogholm; number 226, that of the Governor, Sir Graeme Thomson, and his wife. Officers mentioned include E.J. Arnett, Captain J.J. Emberton, Captain P. Lonsdale; also Ifor Evans, a Cambridge don, author of The British in Tropical Africa, and E.R.J. Hussey, Director of Education. Number 232 is a typescript, "Extracts from 'A resident's wife in Nigeria'", by Constance Larymore, giving an account of Kabba. The last item is an envelope containing 19 photographs with descriptive notes on the backs: some of these were used to illustrate Mathews's paper 'Notes on the Nungu Tribe...', see 2/4. There are photographs of Mathews and Dr. H.G. McKinney.
