Numbers 62-67, written at Zaria, Wamba and Jemaa. Numbers 62-63 describe Mathew's return from leave in England and his journey to Wamba, and living conditions and work in that typical bush station. In number 64 he outlined the principle of government by indirect rule through native authorities. The effect on West Africa of the outbreak of the First World War is described in numbers 65-67, in particular the Cameroons campaign.
