Family correspondence, 19 Jan-2 Nov 1913
Numbers 51-61, written at Jamaa and on trek. In numbers 51-52 Mathews wrote about Lugard's tour of Nigeria. In numbers 52 and 60 he wrote of the murder and dismemberment by 'pagans' at Awulko of a tin-miner named Campbell, and referrred to questions asked in Parliament about the punitive expedition and to the falacious account of the incident given by John H. Harris, Parliamentary Secretary to the Anti-Slavery and Aborigines Protection Society (see also 1/7). There are various other references to Harris in later letters, particularly in 1/13.
