Fair copy of an index to the Arcadia , entitled ‘Sr. Philip Sydneys exact Characters wherein he is both painter & poet...’, 17th cent.
File
MS. Eng. e. 2017
Held at the Weston Library
The index is in two parts:
- (fols. 1-13) In the form of brief moralized summaries of the narrative
- (fols. 14-39) An index of names, ‘A Clavis opening ye names and referring to the Charrecters’. The references given in the manuscript are to one of the editions of the Arcadia published between 1621 and 1638. There are no external evidence of authorship, dating, or provenance, although the hand is similar to that of the ‘Draught’ and the paper on which the index is written bears a similar watermark. Buxton refers to the manuscript in Historical Essays, ibid., p.30, where he states that it came into his possession from the same source as the ‘Draught.’
