One hundred and twelve letters and other papers, written by or relating to Bishop Burnet and his works, the chief of which are:

  1. (fols. 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, 12, 16, 26, 74, 85, 99, 101, 116, 182). Letters or autograph copies of letters and addresses by the bishop: that at fol. 5 is advice to king Charles ii to change his mode of life, dated Jan. 29, 1680, another at fol. 10, dated March 19, 1698, describes Burnet's interview with Peter the Great, czar of Russia;
  2. (fol. 14). A letter from Thomas Comber to Burnet, Dec. 20, 1682, signed 'the Animadvertor';
  3. (fol. 30). Two letters from Dr. John Younger, dean of Salisbury, to Burnet, Aug. 10 and 24, 1706, cf. fol. 9;
  4. (fol. 36). Eleven letters to Burnet, all unsigned and undated, but written by Dr. Robert Leighton, exarchbishop of Glasgow (d. 1684), when in retirement at 'Bradhurst' in the parish of Horsted Keynes in Sussex, between 1675 and 1684;
  5. (fol. 61). A copy by John Hoadly of a letter from 'J. C.' (archBishop Tillotson ?) to Burnet, Oct. 23, 1694;
  6. (fol. 63). A letter from the warden of All Souls (the hon. L. W. Finch) excusing himself from attending Bishop Burnet's Visitation, Oct. 14, 1698, with a copy by the bishop of his sharp reply;
  7. (fol. 67). A description of Charles xii, king of Sweden, by J. Robinson, about 1710;
  8. (fol. 69). Letter from Paul Methuen, British Ambassador at Lisbon, to Bishop Burnet, Dec. 29, 1707;
  9. (fols. 77, 80, 126, 133e, 171). Private papers and letters by or about the bishop's second wife and family, 1698-1733;
  10. (fols. 112, 115). Two memoranda, 1698 and about 1700, relating to the scheme which ultimately became Queen Anne's Bounty;

  12. (fol. 159). A letter from Charles James Hamilton, May 12, 1745, giving an eyewitness's account of the action at Fontenoy;
  13. (fol. 165). A letter from 'Ernst Friderich', Augustus i, elector of Saxony and king of Poland, to Burnet, Nov. 30, 1714, in Latin, with autograph signature;
  14. (fol. 167). Two letters from the princess Sophia of Hanover, mother of George i, to Burnet (1689), in French;
  15. (fols. 180, 183). Three letters from baron Ezechiel Spanheim to Burnet, 1689-1707, in French;
  16. (fol. 186). Two autograph letters of Heinrich Bullinger, the German Reformer, Aug. 23 and Nov. 5, 1569, in Latin;
  17. (fol. 194). 'Journal from Aug. the 8th to Sunday Aug. the 15th, 1731', kept at the Hot Wells, Bristol, probably by sir Thomas Burnet, giving an account of fashionable life there;
  18. (fol. 196). 'Arguments proving that Scutage ought to be imposed by parliament onely ...Sept. 1640';
  19. (fol. 202). Copies of seven English state papers, 1586-1587, made in about 1700;
  20. (fol. 208). Reasons for and against Addressing on the part of the University of Oxford (1679 ?);
  21. (fols. 209, 211). Two original reports of Commissioners of Parliament about the king at Southwell, May 5, 1646, and about the Scotch forces on the Border, Jan. 22, 1643/4;
  22. (fols. 213, 229). Copies of four English state papers, 1560-1588, including two letters of Henry iv, king of France, to mdme. Gabriel, April 22 and May 18 (no year), in French;
  23. (fol. 242). Copy of a proposed 'Act for vniting his Majesties Protestant subjects', of the close of the 17th century.
