A large miscellany of treatises, notes, papers, and excerpts, collected and largely written by Robert Nalson between about 1650 and 1685 (see his name on fols. 2, 12v, 14v, 209v, 241, 443). It is a farrago of notes and copies of documents relating to ecclesiastical, monastic, historical, legal, military, and other subjects, chiefly illustrating English history from 1540 to 1685, with special reference in some cases to Yorkshire. The following may be taken as specimens of the contents:
- poems on the death of -- Baskervile, master of Wakefield free School, by R. Nalson, 1681 (fol. 12), 'of the Plott 1683' by the same (fol. 14v, cf. 241, 388v), on Clarendon House in London, 1665 (fol. 196v), on Laud's death, 1645 (beg. 'No annalls': fol. 240v), on a cock-fight at Wisbeach, June 17, 1673 (fol. 520), 'Vpon these ciuile distractions, 1644' (beg. 'England once Europes envye', fol. 521);
- documents about the wapentakes of Agbrigg and Morley in the West Riding of Yorkshire (fols. 74, 120, 512);
- 'A generall muster through the kingdome of England', according to counties (early 17th century ?: fol. 105, cf. 144, 381, etc.);
- lists of the navy in 1664 and 1672 (fols. 137, 481);
- copy of the Will of Robert Watterton, Jan. 10, 1424/5 (fol. 156);
- 'A catalogue of all the artes and scientes that are taught or read in the Vniuersitie of London (!: about 1630-40?: fol. 164v): pedigree of Savile (fol. 342v, cf. 241v);
- account of the lady Arabella Stuart's death, 1615 (fol. 389);
- the 'ensignes and colors' of the army of Henry V, according to counties, with explanations (fol. 429)
- lord Lucas's speech in the House of Lords, Feb. (?) 1670/1 (fol. 465);
- an account of the trial of the earl of Essex in 160° (fols. 540, 551).
There is an index at fol. 594: and a few later additions.
