Biographical / Historical
The Ministry of Transport was created in 1945, superseding the Ministry of War Transport. From 1953-1959 it was known as the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, thereafter reverting to the Ministry of Transport. In 1970 responsibility for Transport passed to the new Department of the Environment, and the intention was to create a new Backbench Environment Committee but with three subordinate committees dealing with Transport, Housing, and Local Government and Planning. To that end, from 4th November 1970, the Parliamentary Transport Committee was renamed as the Parliamentary Transport Industries Committee, the Housing Committee would continue in existence, and a new Local Government and Planning Committee would be set up. All three would also meet jointly.
In 1976, a Department of Transport was re-established, but between 1997-2002, Transport again became subsumed with Environment, before emerging yet again as a separate department again in 2002.
