Biographical / Historical

A Department of Trade & Industry was first created by Heath in 1970, only to be split up by the incoming Labour Government in 1974 to form the Department of Trade (see series CRD/B/29, above), the Department of Industry (see Series CRD/B/18, above), and the Department of Prices & Consumer Protection (see series CRD/B/24, above). However, with the exception of the latter, most briefs for these departments appear to have been filed under the Parliamentary Commerce Committee - see Series CRD/B/4, above.

The Department of Trade & Industry was re-constituted by Margaret Thatcher in 1983.
