A bound volume of 19th-cent. copies of five organ works by J. S. Bach, on various papers. This probably corresponds with the 'Orgelstücke v. Ritz geschrieben' in Mendelssohn's 1844 list of his music (see vol. III of Catalogue of the Mendelssohn papers in the Bodleian Library, Oxford, compiled by Peter Ward Jones (Tutzing: Hans Schneider, 1989), p. 286, where the suggestion that this was perhaps MS. M. Deneke Mendelssohn c. 70 is now superseded, since c. 70 does not begin with pieces in Rietz's hand). The first four items also appear in an earlier list of the Mendelssohns' music library from the 1820s, when they were still unbound; from this list their copying can be dated as c.1823-5 (see Rudolf Elvers and Peter Ward Jones, 'Das Musikalienverzeichnis von Fanny und Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy', Mendelssohn-Studien 8 (1993), p. 90.

  1. (fols. 1-6) Toccata in D minor, BWV 565, with title-page 'Toccata / di Giov: Seb. Bach'. In the hand of Eduard Rietz (1802-1832). Given to Mendelssohn by Rietz, 1823? (Musikalienverzeichnis - the 1823 date there may be an error for 1824 or 1825).
  2. (fols. 7-14) Passacaglia in C minor, BWV 582, with caption title 'Passacalia / J. S. Bach'. In the hand of Fanny Hensel. Copied 1825 (Musikalienverzeichnis).
  3. (fols. 15-18) Fantasia in G minor, BWV 542/1, with title-page 'Fantasia / di / Giov: Seb: / Bach'. In the hand of Eduard Rietz. Given to Mendelssohn by Ritz, 1824 (Musikalienverzeichnis).
  4. (fols. 19-24) Fugue in G minor, BWV 542/2, with title-page 'Fuga / di / Giov: Seb: Bach'. In the hand of Eduard Rietz. Given to Mendelssohn by Rietz, 1825 (Musikalienverzeichnis).
  5. (fols. 25-9) Pièce d'orgue, BWV 572, with title-page 'Piece d'Orgue / Composee par / Mr Jean Sebast: Bach'. In the hand of Johann August Patzig (1738-1816).
  6. (fols. 30-6) Toccata in F major, BWV 540/1, with caption title 'Preludio'. In the hand of Fanny Hensel. 2 small corrections in red crayon on fol. 36 were probably made by Mendelssohn.
