Henry St John, 1st. Viscount Bolingbroke (1678-1751), politician, government official and political philosopher, was thought to have been a major influence on Voltaire. Barber's M.Litt thesis was 'A bibliography of Henry Saint John, Viscount Bolingbroke', University of Oxford, 1963 (Faculty of Modern History, St. John's College).

His only printed work was Le premier recueil des oeuvres de la muse cosmopolitique (Paris: Jean Loys, 1547). He left unpublished manuscripts of ‘un Chant royal’ and ‘un Pater noster précédé d’une épître en vers à Francesco d’Este, frère d’Alphonse 1er, duc de Ferrare, et remis vers 1530 lors de son passage à la cour d’Angleterre, par l’auteur s’intitulant alors 'poète et auteur du roi d’Angleterre' (from Philippe Renouard, Imprimeurs & Libraires Parisiens du XVIe siècle (Paris-Musées, 1995)).

Jean Bodin (1530–1596) was a lawyer, economist, natural philosopher, historian, and one of the major political theorists of the sixteenth century. A Letter by Jean Bodin in which he discusses the reasons why he became a member of the [Catholic] League ('Lettre Bodin'), of 20 Jan 1590, was published in Paris, Lyons, Toulouse and Brussels.
