In September 1945 Kendrew was approached by J.R.M. Brumwell with a view to his acting as scientific adviser to the Design Research Unit (a design company set up by Herbert Read in which Mischa Black was a Senior Partner). He contributed ideas and reports on possible new developments and devices resulting from scientific advances.

Folder J.67. Correspondence and papers, 1945-1946. Includes "Suggestions for future design" contributed by Kendrew for an exhibition by the Council of Industrial Design.

Folder J.68. December 1948 - July 1951. Mainly relating to a project on man-made fibres and fabrics for Courtaulds. Kendrew contributed a general scheme on the theme of molecular engineering and a series of 15 specific topics.
