In 1974 Richards accepted an invitation from the EMBL Project Leader J.C. Kendrew to join a working group to advise the Laboratory on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance.

For a number of years Richards was one of the scientists who advised the civil defence organisation. In 1957 he was offered the honorary appointment of Regional Scientific Training Officer and in 1962 the post of Scientific Adviser for Civil Defence in the Southern Civil Defence Region. When he was appointed Dr Lee's Professor of Chemistry at Oxford from 1964 he decided to reduce outside commitments and resigned from his civil defence post.
