Cottrell was seconded from ICI to do research at the Physical Chemistry Laboratory Oxford, 1946-1948. He was later Professor of Chemistry at the University of Edinburgh, 1959-1966 and first Principal and Vice-Chancellor of Stirling University, 1965-1973.
