Biographical / Historical
The Campaign Guide was an important compendium of facts and figures published by the Conservative Party, normally produced in preparation for an election campaign. With the advent of direct elections to the European Parliament in 1979, the Party additionally began to publish editions of the Campaign Guide for European election campaigns. A brief volume had also previously been produced for the 1975 referendum on British membership of the European Economic Community.
The Campaign Guide provided the background for all important political questions relating to the work of the European Parliament, as well as a full record of the performance of the Party as compared against the Opposition. Each volume is fully indexed by subject.
Whilst the guides are primarily designed for the Party's own candidates and officials, they were not confidential and were available to the press and other interested observers. In practice - at least unofficially - it came to be regarded as a supplement to the manifesto.
